LASIK: From Beginning to End

Whether you’ve already set up your appointment or you are considering a consultation, All Custom LASIK is a great ‘no-blade’ option to rid yourself of contacts or glasses. However, the process can be a bit daunting or confusing without a proper walk thru.

So, here is your inside scoop of All Custom Lasik: From Beginning to End –

Before Surgery

Before surgery, you’ll need a basic vision and eye care consultation that allows your doctor to form a better idea if you’re a viable candidate for LASIK. This examination evaluates vision, dry eye, inflammation, high eye pressure, signs of infections, amongst an array of other things. If you have a concern about one of these issues (or any other you’ve noticed), alert your doctor.

Once your appointment is completed, and you’ve been approved for LASIK, you’ll schedule another consultation, this time for the LASIK itself.

During this time, your surgeon will create a detailed map of your cornea. This gives them information on exactly how to reshape the cornea. WaveLight® technology makes the surgery more precise and outcomes more predictable.

During Surgery

LASIK Surgery works in two parts.

The first step is a LASIK consultation. Your LASIK surgeon at Shanbom will use the femtosecond laser to create a thin, circular, hinged flap on the surface of the cornea. This flap will be peeled back to expose the inner layer of the cornea for treatment.

The second step is the actual treatment. This is done using an excimer laser. The excimer laser is computer programmed with the map of your cornea and knows exactly where to treat. The excimer laser will remove microscopic amounts of corneal tissue in order to reshape the eye.

After Surgery

Eye care post surgery care  is just as important as pre surgery. You may be asked to wear a form of eye shield so your eyes can better heal. You will need LOTS of sleep and relaxation…hello, pj’s! You may also have to use eye drops in order to relieve any itchiness or burning feeling post surgery.

But after a few days, your vision will improve and your eyes will feel healthy again.

No matter what, Shanbom Eye Specialists will walk you through it all!
