Cataract surgery can improve quality of life and allow the freedom to enjoy senior life.

Cataracts are one of the most common eye conditions in the world. Cataracts are typically caused by normal changes that happen to the lens in your eye over time.

Living with cataracts can be frustrating, especially as you begin to notice your vision decline. Here at Shanbom Eye Specialist, our cataract surgeons offer advanced technology and cataract treatment methods, so you have nothing to worry about!

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the natural lens in the eye becomes cloudy. The natural lens is clear and made up of water and proteins. As you age, the normal proteins start to break down, causing the lens to get cloudy. Cataracts usually develop over a period of years and can cause total blindness if left untreated.

Luckily, vision loss from cataracts is treatable with surgery. Cataract surgery is quick and effective, and can greatly improve your vision. At Shanbom Eye Specialist, we use the most up to date technology, including laser-assisted cataract surgery.

Traditional vs. Laser Cataract Surgery – What’s the Difference?

Traditional cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries in the world. During traditional cataract surgery, your surgeon uses a hand-held blade to create a small incision in your cornea. Your cloudy lens sits in a capsule. The surgeon has to create a round opening in the capsule (called a capsulotomy) to get to the cloudy lens. A probe is then used to break up the cloudy lens, using ultrasound. The surgeon then suctions out the broken-up pieces. An artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is then placed in the capsule. The incision is self-sealing and usually does not require stitches.

Laser cataract surgery is an advanced method of removing cataracts. Laser-assisted cataract surgery requires no blade, and offers more precision for placement of the corneal incision and the capsulotomy. The laser helps soften the cataract and makes it easier to remove, and can also be used to help reduce astigmatism. The remainder of the surgery is the same with both procedures.

ORA Technology

Another kind of technology used during laser-assisted cataract surgery, premium IOL, or high definition IOL placement is the ORA™ System. This allows us to continuously assess your eyes during surgery and assists with proper IOL alignment and astigmatism management.
